What is ioAST?
ioAST stands for the Institute of Appliance Service Technicians. Our independent organization has worked to improve the quality of appliance repair and service by testing and certifying appliance technicians. We certify the appliance service technician, not just the company that they work for.
The Institute of Appliance Service Technicians strives to promote a high standard in appliance repair and service across all brands and designs and to protect the consumer, the service company, and the service technician.
An appliance service technician needs to have some basic understanding of electricity, plumbing, HVAC, appliance installation procedures, on top of having a deep understanding of appliance repair. Appliances are becoming more complicated every year and a comprehensive certification demands we evolve and adapt along with the industry.
Who creates the ioAST Certification Tests?
ioAST Certification tests are a collaborative effort by the instruction staff at Fred’s Appliance Academy, the leading appliance repair school in the United States. Not by any single member of ioAST. Exams are segmented by sub-specialty such as laundry, refrigeration, gas cooking, electric cooking, dishwashers, part identification and customer soft skills.
The exams are challenging. To remain an ioAST certified technician, the technician must re-test every five years to ensure that they are keeping up with the ever evolving technology in the appliance industry.
